You are comparing two breakfast options in a Dubai supermarket. Both contain carbohydrates. Both may provide similar calories. One package talks about whole grains; another highlights fibre. At home, the same question appears in a different form: should you choose white rice or brown rice, juice or whole fruit, refined flour or a less-refined grain?
The useful question is not simply whether a food contains carbohydrates. It is what kind of carbohydrate-containing food you are eating—and how much of its naturally occurring fibre remains.

Dietary fibre is the part of plant-derived carbohydrate that is not completely digested and absorbed in the small intestine. Different fibres behave differently, but collectively they can contribute to normal bowel function and influence digestion, fermentation in the colon, satiety and the overall quality of a carbohydrate-rich diet.
WHO recommends that people aged 10 years and older aim for at least 25 g of naturally occurring dietary fibre per day, primarily through foods such as whole grains, vegetables, fruits and pulses.

Fibre matters less as an isolated nutrition buzzword and more as a characteristic of the foods and dietary pattern you repeatedly choose.
What Exactly Is Dietary Fibre?
Fibre is often described simply as “roughage”, but that description is incomplete.
Dietary fibre includes carbohydrate components that resist digestion in the small intestine. Instead of being completely broken down and absorbed there, different fibres continue through the digestive tract and behave in different ways.
Some contribute substantially to stool bulk. Some absorb or interact with water. Some are fermented by microorganisms in the large intestine. Many foods contain mixtures rather than one isolated type of fibre.
This is why treating “fibre” as though it were one single substance can be misleading.
A bowl of lentils, an apple, oats and vegetables can all contribute fibre, but their fibre structures—and the foods surrounding that fibre—are not identical.

Soluble and Insoluble Fibre: A Useful Start, but Not the Whole Story
You may have seen fibre divided into two categories:
Soluble fibre
Soluble fibre can dissolve or disperse in water, and some types form viscous solutions or are fermented by gut microorganisms.
Insoluble fibre
Insoluble fibre generally does not dissolve in water and can contribute to stool bulk and bowel function.
The distinction is useful, but modern fibre science is more nuanced than a simple two-box classification.
Fibres also differ in properties such as viscosity, fermentability and water-holding capacity. These characteristics help determine what a particular fibre does within a food and digestive system.
That is why asking only, “Is this soluble or insoluble?” does not tell the entire story.

What Happens to Fibre After You Eat It?
Imagine a mixed meal containing dal, vegetables and a whole grain.
Most digestible carbohydrate is broken down into smaller molecules that can be absorbed in the small intestine.

Components resistant to digestion continue further through the gastrointestinal tract. Depending on their physical and chemical properties, they may retain water, contribute to stool structure or become substrates for fermentation by microorganisms in the colon.
Fermentation of certain fibres can produce metabolites including short-chain fatty acids. Research shows that individual fibres can affect the gut microbiota and short-chain fatty-acid production differently; the response is not identical for every fibre or every person.

It is tempting to convert microbiome science into simple marketing statements such as “fibre feeds good bacteria.” The reality is more complex: different substrates favour different microbial activities, and effects depend on fibre type, diet and the individual.

Why Does Fibre Matter Every Day?
The strongest reason to think about fibre is not that a single high-fibre meal produces a dramatic effect.
It is that fibre-rich foods form part of a dietary pattern.
WHO's current carbohydrate guidance recommends obtaining carbohydrates primarily from whole grains, vegetables, fruits and pulses and recommends at least 25 g of naturally occurring dietary fibre daily for people aged 10 and above.
EFSA has similarly concluded that 25 g of dietary fibre per day is adequate for normal bowel function in adults, while noting evidence of additional health benefits at higher intakes.
The broader scientific evidence also matters. WHO's evidence review underpinning its carbohydrate guideline found that higher fibre intake was associated with favourable health outcomes and improvements in several risk factors. This is population-level evidence; it should not be turned into a promise that an individual fibre-rich product prevents or treats disease.
Build fibre into ordinary meals repeatedly rather than searching for a single “fibre superfood.”
Where Does Fibre Naturally Come From?
Fortunately, fibre does not require an exotic pantry.
- Whole grains — including oats, whole wheat, barley, millets and brown rice
- Pulses — lentils, chickpeas, beans and dried peas
- Vegetables
- Whole fruits
- Nuts and seeds
WHO specifically places whole grains, vegetables, fruits and pulses at the centre of carbohydrate-quality recommendations.
This also explains why the word carbohydrate on a nutrition panel cannot tell you everything about carbohydrate quality.
A refined cereal product, whole grain, fruit and pulse can all contribute carbohydrate, but they arrive in very different food structures and with different amounts and types of fibre.

Fibre Was Part of Food Before It Became a Nutrition Claim

People did not need the modern term dietary fibre before eating foods that naturally contained it.
Across many culinary traditions, meals have long incorporated legumes, grains, vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds. Indian food traditions provide familiar examples: dals, whole pulses, vegetables, millet preparations and less-refined grains can all contribute fibre as part of ordinary meals.
This does not mean every traditional diet was automatically fibre-rich, nutritionally ideal or superior to modern eating patterns. Nor does historical consumption prove a modern health claim.
The useful lesson is narrower:
Fibre-rich eating can be built from familiar foods rather than depending entirely on specially formulated “high-fibre” products.
That distinction matters for multicultural UAE households, where fibre sources may look very different from kitchen to kitchen.
One household may use chickpeas and whole wheat. Another may rely more heavily on beans, oats and vegetables. Another may regularly cook lentils, brown rice or millets.
The ingredients change. The underlying dietary principle can remain.
Does Processing Always Remove Fibre?
No.
This is where another common shortcut fails.
“Processed” does not automatically mean “no fibre.”
Processing can change the physical structure of a food, and certain refining operations can remove fibre-rich portions of grains. But processing covers many different operations—cleaning, milling, grinding, cooking, rolling, flaking, fermentation and extrusion among them.
The meaningful question is therefore not:
“Has this food been processed?”
Ask instead:
“What processing occurred, what parts of the original food remain, and what does the final nutrition information show?”
Whole-grain flour, for example, has clearly been processed by grinding, yet can retain components of the whole grain. Highly refined grain products may have more of the fibre-containing outer grain fractions removed.
Processing deserves investigation, not automatic judgement.

Treat it as a claim to verify—not as the complete verdict on the product.
The front of a package is designed to help communicate quickly. Your decision should continue on the back.

Is the fibre coming naturally from whole grains, pulses, vegetables, fruits, nuts or seeds? -
Read the ingredient list.
Understand what the product is actually made from. -
Check the nutrition declaration.
Look at the declared fibre amount and the serving or 100 g basis being used. -
Consider the whole formulation.
One positive nutrient claim does not automatically define the nutritional quality of the complete food. -
Think about your whole day.
Fibre is a dietary-pattern issue, not a competition to find the package with the biggest number.
Should You Suddenly Increase Your Fibre Intake?
Usually, dramatic overnight changes are unnecessary.
If your usual diet contains relatively little fibre, increasing fibre-containing foods progressively can be more practical. Adequate fluid intake is also relevant to normal bowel function.
